His attitude spunky and his appearance misleading, Marco is a tough and easily annoyed boy. He really hates it when people think he's a girl or really young. He's a master blackbelt in any type of Japanese hand-to-hand fights, which catches Luffy's eye.
They sort of get off on the wrong foot when Sanji thinks he's a girl. Marc is really stubborn sometimes, and he has an issue against pirates, but after a few weeks of annoying persuasion and a hand against some mad-driven pirates, Marc joins the crew. He's often used for a pity-party against stupid enemies or he's dressed up as a girl for even stupider enemies. So, overall, his small size, awesome kung-fu fighting, and girly appearance makes him a great use in the Staw Hat Pirates.
